I found a tutorial for making one out of a kitchen towel, using a few pieces of elastic to scrunch the top and bottom and attaching a ribbon for hanging. It turned out so well I am making a lot more for gifts! A kitchen towel is only $1.

The fleece hat I made to match the scarf I made a while ago for my youngest. I may have made the hat a bit on the small side, so I hope it fits. It was very simple and quick- no sewing involved. I used fabric scraps for the scarf and hat so these projects were free.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-29884488115868825332014-11-10T05:01:00.001-08:002014-11-10T05:01:20.311-08:00A gift a day: fleece scarf and stuffed animal sleeping bagsLast night I whipped up some stuffed animal sleeping bags. I made two and I used fleece and flannel so the bags would be soft and cozy. Lucky animals! However the fleece ended up being a bit too thick so next time I won't use it. I did the second one a bit differently as the original tutorial called for a lot of needless steps.

The fleece scarf was the exact amount I had leftover! All I did was cut the fringe. Now that's what I call a quick project!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-76799036145550509162014-11-08T05:10:00.001-08:002014-11-08T05:10:24.511-08:00A gift a day- HeadbandsMy girls love to wear all sorts of frilly and girly stuff in their hair. I saw this tutorial for these east headbands made out of ribbon and hair ties and thought it was right up our alley.

Each one took just a few minutes to make, using things I already had on hand. I made the flowers from felt pieces hot glued together and then got glued them onto the headbands. I may make a few more if I can find some fun discounted ribbon!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-10142025182963342732014-11-07T07:47:00.001-08:002014-11-07T07:47:06.495-08:00A gift a DayI love sharing my sewing and craft projects, and I'll have a lot of them coming up since our Christmas this year is going to be mostly homemade gifts. I'm aiming for one gift or part of a gift every day. Here is what I have done so far:

Barbie clothes from felt. This is one outfit out of 6 I hope to make for the girls' barbies. They were pretty simple to make but I may experiment with different patterns. The key is making them super easy to take off and put on, otherwise the girls won't bother with playing with them.

My draft stopper was an easy project,, and I made a couple for our home. I plan on making several more for gifts. I filled mine with kitty litter in newspaper bags. The dimensions for a 36" door are 6" by 40". Home decor or duck fabric works best, but you can use whatever.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-6263613777675749972014-08-18T12:25:00.000-07:002014-08-18T12:25:10.235-07:00Dallas 4 yr UpdateI noticed I never put an update on how Dallas is doing, so here we go!

At her latest doctor visit in May, she was 33.4lbs and 3 ft 5inches tall. She is still in the 90th percentile for height and in the 25th percentile for weight, just where she was when she was born! She wears size 2T-3T in shorts, size 4T-5T in adjustable waist long pants and size 5T shirts for length.

At four years old, she is very well potty trained (she trained in January of this past year at 3.5). She takes herself to the potty with no problems and has never had an accident. She night-time trained very quickly, just a few weeks after she daytime trained. She sleeps around 11 hours at night with no nap.

She gets herself dressed unassisted every morning now and can pick out coordinating clothing very well. It is rare that I have to tell her to choose a different outfit to wear! She loves to wear clothing sets and makes different shoe choices often!

Her speech continues to improve, she now communicates her feelings without too much of an issue. Her vocabulary remains limited, however, so we are working on that with lots of books and reading time!

Dallas loves imaginative play - she can keep herself occupied for hours alone, playing with Minnie Mouse sets, blocks, Little People and other small toys. Sometimes this is a problem for her little sister, who always wants to play with her! Still working on getting her to share better with Dahlia too.

For her 4th birthday, she was gifted her first bicycle with training wheels from us, and although the first couple of times riding it were rough as she tried to figure it out, she has really gotten the hang of it and now rides with ease around the block!

She loves our cats, and enjoys picking them up and carrying them from one room to the other. Thankfully Luna and Pickles don't get too upset by this. She will say her favorite pet is Luna, although she really loves Pickles too. She steers clear of Mrs. Weasley and her bad temper!

Dallas can now write her own name and knows most of her letters as well as numbers 1-20. She still has difficulty writing the "s" in her name, but we are working on it. She enjoys painting, coloring, cutting and pasting, and doing any sort of craft. She loves to sing songs together.

High energy, outgoing and adventurous, Dallas rarely complains when we are doing something new together. She can hike for hours by herself and enjoys time in the forest exploring. Her favorite family activity is camping and she is becoming a real water bug!

Favorite foods include anything that is sweet, tomatoes, greek yogurt with maple syrup, chili and spaghetti and Popsicles (does that count as food?). She is good about eating what we give her and is not picky, liking to try new things. She comes to the table asking us "What are we eating today?" and we repsond by saying things like, "Tonight we are having burgers and baked beans," to which she replies, "Oh, Mmmmm Baked Beans, I like baked beans!"

Starting to protest naps but still needs one.

Talking very well, mostly clear. Says things like "no mommy I want to do it myself!" "I'm hungry!" "Uh huh" "I want to jump in the pool!" "Daddy changed me." On and on lol

Pees on the potty if I take her on a regular basis. Still in the beginning stages of potty training though. Has pooped on potty 1 time.

Plays well with Dallas, follows her and does everything with her, they are best friends.

Favorite foods are crackers, spaghetti, Mac and cheese, cereal and cookies! Loves popcorn and Popsicles. And suckers. Hates veggies and fruits except bananas! Have to make her take 3 bites though or sneak them in. Picky eater.

Favorite toys are her green lovey (she still sleeps with it), Minnie Mouse and other stuffed animals, her tricycle, jewelry and little people.

Very demanding and insistent at this she. She yells what she wants and gets angry easily, very intense tantrums!!
They turned out wonderful! The fall colors and the backdrop of the river was beyond beautiful. I'm having trouble picking which ones to frame! My original goal with her was 18 months and I was able to make it to just about 2 years! Although the last few months were short feedings in the evenings only, we still enjoyed the time together and she was able to get some more of that wonderful milk, concentrated and sweet I'm sure! I feel very blessed to have breastfed her so successfully and to have met a milestone I know most never see. It was truly not something that came easy for me, as I have trouble making a lot of milk. My body in fact does not respond well to a pump (I can barely get an ounce even when feeding a newborn), and because of that I never gave Dahlia a bottle. She has never had a sip of formula either. This required a lot of commitment on my part- I never left her for more than 4 hours at a time, and I did nightly feedings for over a year. I nursed on demand to keep up a decent supply, so most days I nursed every 2-3 hrs in the first year. I was happy to do it though, I knew it was good for her and good for me. Breastfeeding relaxed me immensely, something that I needed a lot of having children just 18 months apart! I am so proud to have extended breastfeeding, and I just want to encourage any other mothers out there that it can be done and be a beautiful thing.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-89121669077839097152014-01-03T15:19:00.001-08:002014-01-03T15:19:05.116-08:00Money Saving Tip: Buy Outerwear One Size Up!Here's a quick money saving tip! Instead of buying the current size for your child in a winter jacket or snow gear, buy the next size up. This way, not only will they fit for the current season, but they will be able to wear them in the beginning of next season as well! By the time they start to grow out of it, you can pace yourself looking for clearance sales since you'll know in advance they need a new one while the current one still fits. We did this with winter coats for our girls last year and it has worked out perfectly. Same with snow pants. As a bonus, we were prepared with snow gear that still fit once the early October storm came through this year. And we had time to shop for sales and get the best deal on new coats. We bought Peanut's new ski-jacket (originally $40) for just $16. Today we scored Snowflake a similar jacket for $17 (originally $33). Both of their new jackets will fit until mid winter next year since we bought a size up too! I sometimes do this one size up thing with clothes if I know it will work ok while they grow into it. Think sweaters, sweatshirts, leggings and tights. I don't recommend doing this with shoes though haha!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-28897142739674148042013-12-11T14:30:00.001-08:002013-12-11T14:30:28.667-08:00Montessori Learning at HomeWe have started to recently incorporate some of the Montessori techniques in our home. Today was the first day with the girls sitting at their own table, setting their plates and cups and cleaning up after themselves. It has been a long day of teaching! But I can see how beneficial this will be for them already. They love having their own special cupboard with new plates and bowls. And of course, they really enjoy pouring their own water from the pitchers! In about a month we will introduce some other routines until they know this one well enough without as much instruction.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-5367189828505355412013-12-05T16:50:00.001-08:002013-12-05T16:50:02.798-08:00Celebrating AdventWe are celebrating Advent this year by doing different activities every day until Christmas. Since we got back from our Thanksgiving travels on the 1st, we didn't really get started until the 4th but the girls will never know ;).

I have made a board on pinterest with inspiration projects and crafts. There are so many good ideas it's hard to narrow it all down!

Yesterday Dahlia colored a snowman decoration (the kind that comes in the $1 Kits at craft stores) and Dallas practiced making snowflakes. Since her preschool teacher wants her to work on her scissor skills, this will be something we do all winter long! I used coffee filters to make the snowflakes.

Today, Dallas went to the library with me and checked out a few more Christmas books. I have started displaying the seasonal books on our bookshelf in the living room, which is free decor and helps the girls want to read them! We also made ornaments for the tree, using a cut out small circle wreath from cardboard and gluing Pom Poms around it. Dahlia didn't really understand you were supposed to keep the Pom poms on, but she had fun taking them off and putting them back on! Dallas' survived but needs a lot more glue than I thought for it to hold up. This was more of a good idea in theory!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-12854724980173370492013-11-07T08:23:00.001-08:002013-11-07T08:23:48.458-08:00Pantry organizingI finally got around to fixing my problem with inadequate pantry space. I'm sort of kicking myself for not doing it sooner! I love the new pantry we purchased, it has made life in the kitchen so much easier! We bought a closet maid pantry from Target on sale for $58, a very affordable option for those lacking the necessary storage for a growing family! We can now reach our plates with performing gymnastics while the dishwasher is open, and I can more effectively menu plan and write grocery lists now that I can clearly see what we have. It's a great solution! Here are some photos of the main area (we keep our cups and baking supplies in separate cabinets).

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-86987069834264285552013-08-05T12:17:00.000-07:002013-08-05T12:17:12.803-07:00Vacation Countdown and Some Catch Up

We leave for our beach vacation in just 24 days! I can't wait to relax by the ocean and play in the water and sand with our girls!

This summer has been full of fun, visiting parks, museums, a family trip to West Virginia and a camping trip at Tar Hollow. Although it definitely has not been the warmest year, we have still enjoyed our backyard and playing in the blow up pool!

Snowflake is starting to talk all the time now, and she can even say complete sentences! She just amazes us with how clever she is! Currently, she loves to color and draw and do anything that big sister Peanut is doing!

Peanut isn't much of a peanut anymore! She starts preschool in just a little over 2 weeks! She is really growing into such a beautiful, smart, sweet and thoughtful little girl. She loves Minnie Mouse, playing in the pool, exploring, shopping, doing puzzles, chasing butterflies, reading and of course, anything that's sweet!
It has been a long winter for us, with much colder than average temperatures, several significant snowfalls and cabin fever hitting us hard. Even now towards the end of April, we have only had a handful of warm days, and our furnace is still getting a nice workout.

Here are some photos of our rapidly growing little girls and life around the Campbell Castle during this time:
I think it turned out great, and I cannot wait to use it! It seems a bit smaller than I would have liked, so it won't fit Peanut but should fit Snowflake perfectly. I used a tutorial I found online for these: http://www.thehandmadedress.blogspot.com/2012/12/diaper-tutorial-how-to-make-fitted-from.html?m=1

I plan on making several more of these to add to our cloth diaper rotation so I don't have to wash every other day.
We feel so much better when we have homemade bread and I feel at ease knowing exactly what's in it. I use out bread maker for our everyday bread, but I bake the sourdough in the oven. The sourdough is actually the easiest! I bake it in a deep baking dish and no kneading is required, just a long rise time. I made my our starter from scratch so I am really pleased with how well it has been doing.

The last photo is a kid friendly way to eat chili! Recipe from family circle magazine.
Snowflake is 13 months old now and doing well. She is very advanced in her motor and language skills compared to her sister and she is still getting plenty of momma milk! I love watching her little personality take shape!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-27770110071439797302013-01-25T15:09:00.001-08:002013-01-25T15:09:05.539-08:00Easy Toddler JumperRecently Peanut has been in need of some larger dresses. I decided to take advantage of the 99 cent simplicity pattern sale at hobby lobby and bought some new patterns and clearance fabric. I sewed up this bright jumper very quickly. The sizing was larger than I wanted but ensures she will be able to wear it for some time. I love how versatile it is- she can layer it for warmth or wear with a t-shirt in the spring/summer.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-756760582993711142013-01-07T10:16:00.001-08:002013-01-07T10:16:32.109-08:00New year!Happy 2013! More fun, more toys and presents and much busier! We are up wrapping presents for the second night in a row. Actually, Daddy C is wrapping, I am instructing from my perch on the couch, cuddled up with a bowl of popcorn and cookies on the side!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheaTZizaxE3dQmwM8kCgPMip7BA07Q3f-NSNrGrDGKpQOdgddWJ7_Hhuzb4vRV8V0saJzDPII_IYvh5KhtoHm0aXg2AB2M_0T12EdqWT0CzFlY66_zv2N3DwAgF6jzp-aAICoSnjpcT5E/s640/blogger-image-1114050712.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I am excited for this since I think it will help me to post more often.

Today we finished up our Christmas cookies for our friends and neighbors. Dallas had a blast licking the spoon and would also run off with a piece of cookie dough every so often. She tried to use the cookie cutters but was not very successful at it. We made no bake cookies (my first time ever making them- so easy too) and sugar cookies. We kept the sugar cookies plain since I figured there was enough sugar in them already!

Dahlia's birthday is next week - I cannot believe how fast the time has gone! We are looking forward to celebrating her first Christmas together.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17092124950661014527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8384644011924156922.post-83609174039506119762012-12-12T17:02:00.002-08:002012-12-12T17:02:56.145-08:002.5 YearsDallas will be 2.5 years old in a week or so! She has turned into such a fun-loving, emotional, energetic little girl! I love her to death, but she is quite the challenge most days. Her terrible twos seem to have made a reappearance as of late, after several months of improvement. She really is annoyed by her sister most of the time and we have to constantly remind her to be nice and not hit, to share and to not erupt into a scream every time her sister says something!

She is still not potty trained, but I am not worried. I am taking my time with it, as I have no desire to begin training and end up at a dead end of frustration due to her not being fully ready. She is not showing ANY signs of readiness so we will leave it at that. I plan on starting to train her closer to 3. For now, it's 2 in diapers still!

Dallas is finally beginning to talk more after taking away the pacifier a little over a month ago. I have a suspicion that is where the problems we have with her are coming from. She doesn't quite know how to calm or control herself without it. Hopefully that will improve over the next couple of months. She talks in sentences now, and is saying new things every day.

I have started preschool with her at home, as she needs and thrives under the structure of activities and the learning. I love that I am able to start her when she is ready and see her learn new things! It's truly a whole new world and helps me remember to involve her and teach her throughout the day, reinforcing what is being taught. Rob is able to have a hand in it as well, which he loves.
This is about a month and a half earlier than her sister! She is so cute and so small when she walks! She still sometimes crawls if she is tired or needs to get somewhere quick, but mostly she is walking now.

She also has added some new words to her vocabulary. Along with mama, dada, kitty, sissy, hi, ball and jump, she can say bird, cat, water (wa-wa) and some other word we can't quite identify but which she associates with her lovey.

She is growing so fast, and everyday she resembles more and more a toddler and less and less a baby. I am treasuring the moments because I know how quickly they go. Soon, she will be a "terrible" toddler and we will have a whole other world to deal with!

I am still breastfeeding her (current goal is 18 months so still 6 months to go!), although not exclusively. Her favorite foods are biscuits and crackers, mashed anything (potatoes, sweet potatoes), bananas, baked oatmeal, larabars and eggs. She does seem to have a food allergy as evidenced by her eczema outbreaks, but we still have not been able to correctly identify what it is. We are in the process of beginning a big elimination diet to see if we can rule out the most popular allergens right away. She nurses about every 3-4 hours, depending on the day and how she feels. If she is sick, she will nurse about every 2. The daytime sessions usually do not last more than a few minutes, but her nursing style was always very quick even from the beginning. She still nurses at night 2-3 times as well, although the stretches are slowly getting longer and longer. I look forward to the day she starts sleeping through the night, which will hopefully be very soon!!
We planted 28 tomato plants and ended up canning 21 pints of tomato sauce from them. The last batch I canned today, yes, in December, thanks to freezing the tomatoes whole in gallon sized bags in our deep freezer. I will definitely do this method again next year. It wasn't the best year for tomatoes, so I was glad I planted so many of them. We grew many different varieties as an experiment, and some didn't do very well. Next summer we will know what does well in our area and can hopefully grow more!

Back in June, I was able to buy 6 or so pints of blueberries for just 99 cents each. I made blueberry jam for the first time from them, and ended up with 10 or so half pints of blueberry jam. It is so yummy, and nice to get a taste of summer in the middle of winter! We love it with toast or peanut butter on bread.

I had planned on canning more applesauce, apple butter and some more jelly, but the apple sales never materialized and I figured we had enough jelly as it was. The lowest the apples ever went was $0.99 lb, a far cry from the 49 cents the previous year. It was a bad year for apples though, and Michigan lost most of their crop. It was a bad year for farmers too - the corn here withered into nothing in many areas from the long, hard drought. I did end up stocking up on canning jars anyway, and that will help me with next years canning. I'm hoping to acquire a pressure-canner and can other vegetables such as green beans and maybe peas.
That might be putting it lightly, actually. I don't know how larger families do it, but I'm sure they figure things out or else everyone would only have two children. Even though I am far from having it all put together, I do implement some things to keep my life as simple as possible and reduce stress. The number one thing I try to eliminate is unnecessary shopping or errands. Putting 2 little squirmy girls into their carseats, back out, then back in and out again all for a simple run for toilet paper is exhausting. I thus try and bulk buy whenever possible. Although I do try and get the lowest price, price is not always my only consideration. I also consider the time I will save by buying something at another store that I know costs a little more if I am already there.

Let's talk diapers for a moment. Disposables are "easy". Easy on, easy off. Easy throwing them in the trash. Until it stinks up the whole house... then you are reduced to carrying each diaper out of the house and into the outside garbage can. Until you run out unexpectedly and have to run to the store... spend lots of money and turn the whole errand into the main event for the day. Until your baby starts smelling like some weird chemical experiment because her urine is reacting to the strange ingredients that make up a disposable...

Now let's think about all the "work" involved with cloth diapers. I have a full stash of cloth diapers for both my 10 month old and my 28 month old. I never have to run to the store to buy disposables. I always have diapers as long as I clean them. My cloth diapers take maybe 5 seconds longer to put on - that's it, seriously. When changing a dirty one, I unzip a wet bag and throw the soiled diaper in it, then zip it back up. No weird smells emit from this odor proof bag, and since there are no chemicals to react with, the general smell is less overall as well. If the diaper is really dirty, I go around the corner and shake it in the toilet or let it soak in there for an hour or so. When the wet bag is full, I dump it in the wash and wash them. Then I take them out and lay them on a rack to dry (I air dry most of my clothes so this is not an extra step for me. However you could just as easily throw them in the dryer if you wanted). Compare the washing to driving to the store, and cloth diapers come out ahead. So for this reason and many others, I use cloth diapers to help keep things simplified.

Another thing I do to help save my sanity is buying in bulk. I watch sales and stock up when the price is right. I have a basement, so this is not a space issue for me like it is for others. I utilize Sam's club for certain items as well, and I shop there about 4x a year to stock up on the good deals. I have a 7 ft cubic freezer in my basement where I like to freeze bread, veggies, cheese, meat and other frozen items. I have even frozen milk. This all helps keep my grocery shopping less harried and less frequent since I am usually fairly well stocked on our basics. In addition, I keep a personal hygiene stockpile that includes items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, body wash, soap and razors. Most of these items were obtained for very little by utilizing coupons and store promotions. It is rare that I think about buying these things, since we always have plenty.

These are just a couple of ways I keep my life simple. I know I have a long ways to go before I figure everything else out, but I'm hoping little by little to continue to get more organized and prepared for my family's needs by implementing simple systems such as these.
